Chemical sensors are extremely important tools for monitoring chemical species in biological systems, environmental situations, and chemical processes. Optical sensors offer further advantages such as freedom from electrical interference, ease of miniaturization and ability to perform remote sensing. In particular, sol-gel glass is well suited as a support matrix for chemical sensors because of its excellent optical clarity, and its ability to be cast as thin films. Molecular imprinting process technology also offers promising technology for developing high selective/specific binding materials for chemical sensing, separation and sample clean up.

Current research focuses on investigating new configurations and materials for the sensing and detection of macromolecules, bacteria, ions, small molecules and gases. For example, we have developed sensors for heparin, protamine, imidazole, potassium, chloride, urea, methyl amine, and ammonia. Our research is also directed at developing separation protocols for important drugs, such as chiral separation of ibuprofen, synergistic anticancer drugs paired with Doxorubicin.
