Even before attending her first class, Sheila Kiernan ’22CCPS felt like she found a second home at St. John’s University. “I visited several New York City universities when I was going through the application process,” Ms. Kiernan recalled. “But one of the reasons why I loved St. John’s was because giving back to the community is so much a part of its mission. I liked the location—but I really liked the feel of the Queens, NY, campus and the University.”
Katrina Reese Curato ’10C has not ended up where she thought she would, but that’s fine with her/them. Reese identifies as a demi-pan person with they/them/she/her pronouns. A native of Nanuet, NY, Reese sought to expand her horizons when it was time for college. “I wanted to get out into the real world and sought out opportunities for growth and leadership.” She only applied to St. John’s University as it checked all her important boxes for college: proximity to New York City; a Study Abroad program; a large, diverse student body; safe, on-campus residence halls; and a strong Campus Ministry program rooted in service.
From Berea, KY—via St. John’s University—like the intrepid reporter that she is, Alicia Venter ’22CCPS is ready to go wherever her career and faith take her. The 2022 graduate of The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies and former Editor-in-Chief of St. John’s student newspaper The Torch is an aspiring business journalist whose conversion to Catholicism marked her time at the University.
When St. John’s University accepted Taifha Natalee Alexander (nee Baker) ’12CPS as a first-year student, it did so on the condition that she achieve and maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA). Despite the stipulation, she leaped at the opportunity.

For his master’s thesis in International Communication, Mr. Gardner crafted a documentary that not only charts his life with apraxia, but also the experiences of others—all done to draw attention to a relatively unknown condition. The film, Finding Our Voice, shares the many success stories of people diagnosed with apraxia and the resources at their disposal.
