Robert Gonzalez, Ed.D.

Assistant Professor
DR Robert Gonzalez retired from the NYPD in 2015 as an Assistant Commissioner of Training after 23 years of service. Robert held positions in the NYPD as a patrol officer with experience in community policing, a supervisor on patrol, and a senior executive in the area of police training. Currently Robert is an Assistant Professor in the College of Professional Studies in the Division of Criminal Justice, Legal Studies and Homeland Security. Prior to his full-time appointment, Robert was an adjunct professor for five years in the graduate division in the Homeland Security and Leadership Program. Robert’s research interests focus on the area of entry-level law enforcement training; with additional focus on in-service and executive level training programs. As a commissioner in the NYPD’s Training Bureau, Robert designed the new Field Training Officer Program that is currently being implemented citywide in New York City. In this program, rookie officers are partnered up with veteran officers to extend their police academy training with real on the street experience under the guidance of a Field Training Officer. Robert intends to assess the effectiveness of this program as one of his future research projects. Robert possesses a wealth of experience in academia as a former instructor at John Jay College, NYIT, Monroe College, and Hostos Community College. Over the last 15 years Robert has taught courses in the area of Community Policing, Patrol Functions, Investigations, and Homeland Security- just to name a few.
