Dr. Jin Zhi (DDes | MSc | MFA | PG Cert in HE | BA (Hons) |

Dr. Zhi is a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Mass Communication. He earned a distinguished MSc degree in visual effects and compositing from the University of Westminster, London, UK; an MFA degree in Film Design and a Doctor degree (in film visual effects and 3D computer-generated imagery) from Seoul National University. Additionally, Dr. Zhi also obtained a postgraduate certificate in higher education from the University of Greenwich, London, UK, and he has been awarded as a fellow member of the UK Higher Education Academy since 2017. Dr. Zhi is also a Nuke (VFX) Trainer officially certified by the Foundry UK headquarters.

Before joining St. John’s University, Dr. Zhi worked as a full-time permanent Senior Lecturer in a couple of UK leading universities. In 2016 – 17, Dr. Zhi successfully designed and delivered a funding project, VFX HE Online Mentoring Program, which was funded by the British Film Institute and the UK ScreenSkills (Creative Skillset) and directly supported by three world-renowned visual effects studios and eight universities across the UK.

Dr. Zhi is also a leading film visual effects artist, who firmly engaged with world-leading visual effects (VFX) studios. His work can be seen in various feature films, such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, John Carter, Prometheus, and Wrath of the Titans. Dr. Zhi has been working as a VFX and compositing supervisor for high-end TV commercials since 2018. His projects involved a series of well-known international brands, including Volkswagen, Volvo, Adidas, Ford Lincoln, Haier Group Corporation, Bosideng International Holdings Limited, etc.

Dr. Zhi also regularly publishes research papers in a series of high-impact international journals such as ACM. Additionally, his first new book about film visual effects was published by Tsinghua University Press (TUP) in 2021. Dr. Zhi is currently working on his second new book, entitled 'Invisible Visual Effects for Film and Television' and contracted with Routledge Press, New York. The book is scheduled for its first issuance in 2023.
