Yu-Hsuan Liu

Yu-Hsuan (Sean) Liu, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security in The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies. His research connects big data analytics, crime mapping, and victimization with interests spanning crime statistics, violence and gun control, police management and performance, terrorism, and human trafficking. Much of his work draws on search trends and digital trace data to surface issues in criminal justice that conventional sources tend to miss or struggle to reach.

His work has been recognized with several awards, including the Outstanding Dissertation Award and the James Fyfe Award from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a Summer Research Award from St. John’s University, and the Government Scholarship to Study Abroad from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. His articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Criminal Justice, Crime Science, Methodological Innovations, Victims & Offenders, Deviant Behavior, Social Science Research, and the Journal of Human Trafficking. His current research looks at how digital trace data can improve the way crime is measured, forecast, and evaluated in policy.
