She received her Ph.D. from The State University of New York at Buffalo. Her research is preparing teachers in the area of health, math and science education.
Smita has written three books Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Leaders, Healthy Children and Teacher as Researcher published by a national publisher, Rowman and Littlefield. Her fourth book, Critical literacy for socio-emotional learning: Empowering teachers to write children's literature is in print by Peter Lang Series. She has contributed several book chapters Food Insecurity and Literacy Learning, Prospects of nanotechnology in food industry: Implication on public health, Culturally Relevant Literacy to Support Academic Achievement in STEM, and Children’s Health Matters: Role of Family, School and Community (Under contract).Forty-one of her articles have been published in scholarly journals. Her work were published in peer reviewed scholarly Journals as Young Children, Childhood Education, Science and Children, Teaching Children Mathematics, Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, Information Technology in Childhood Education, Journal of Educational Computing Research, Journal of Research on Technology in Education, International Journal of Early Years Education and TechTrends. She has presented at numerous national, international, state and local conferences including AERA, NAEYC and ACEI. She has 10 years' experience working directly with young children and 20 years of experience in teacher education. She has been involved with professional development for teachers in public schools in New York. She also was involved in Travel Abroad Program taking a group of teachers to Italy and France to enrich their learning experiences.
In her community, she is the founder for an after- school program to demonstrate the collaboration of family, school and community partnership. She has received state grants and has worked with several underprivileged mothers and children living in homeless shelters both in US and in India on a continual basis.
Among the recent awards, she received the Fulbright US Scholar award, Citation from Nassau County, State of New York, Talent Award from New York State Assembly, New York City Corps Artist Award, special recognition of honor for dedication and service to the community from New York State Assembly, Outstanding Citizen award from The Council of the City of New York and from New York State Assembly Outstanding Community Program Leadership, Community Service award, and Certificate of Merit from New York State Assembly. Further, she received Merit Award, and Faculty Recognition Awards (twice) from St. Johns’ University.
