David M. Pooser, Ph.D.

Associate Professor
David Pooser is an associate professor of risk management and insurance at St. John’s University. David received his Ph.D. in risk management and insurance from Florida State University and joined the St. John’s University faculty in 2012. He has papers published in risk management and insurance field and professional journals, including the Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, Journal of Insurance Issues, Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance – Issues and Practice, and Journal of Insurance Regulation. David regularly serves as a reviewer for these and other academic journals. He attends and presents research at regional and national academic conferences and is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, Southern Risk and Insurance Association, and Western Risk and Insurance Association. David has served on numerous committees for the American Risk and Insurance Association as well as the Board of Directors for the Southern Risk and Insurance Association. In addition to his research, David teaches courses on Insurance Fundamentals and Risk Control at St. John’s University. He previously taught courses on Risk Management, Insurance, and Catastrophe Risk at Florida State University and Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. David has delivered seminar presentations to state lawmakers on topics of insurance fundamentals, property insurance, and insurance regulation through the Griffith Foundation, the National Conference of State Legislatures, and National Conference of Insurance Legislators. David also serves as the faculty advisor to St. John’s University’s chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma – the collegiate insurance society. The St. John’s chapter is consistently ranked among the top in the nation and has won the prestigious Edison L. Bowers Award, which is awarded annually to the highest performing Gamma chapter. David’s teaching interests include the risk management process, risk assessment, and insurance fundamentals. His research focuses on insurer ownership, managerial decision making, and enterprise risk management.
