Raymond A. DiGiuseppe, Ph.D., ABPP, is Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Institutional Review Board (Research Ethics Committee) and studies anger as a clinical problem. He has promoted the recognition of anger as a form of psychopathology and studies the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of persons with anger problems. He has developed standards for identifying anger diagnostic disorders. Dr. DiGiuseppe has published two psychological tests assessing dysfunctional anger: the Anger Disorders Scale (ADS) for adults and the Anger Regulation and Expression Scale (ARES) for children and adolescents. He works on developing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy's theory, practice, and empirical research support. He has developed measures of Ellis' concept of irrational and rational beliefs and their relationship to other cognitive behavior constructs and emotional disturbance. Ray works at identifying the ancient philosophical roots of Stoicism in modern Rational and Cognitive psychotherapies.

After earning a B.S. degree from Villanova University and an M.S. from SUNY Brockport, Ray received his Ph.D. from Hofstra University in 1975. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Albert Ellis Institute in 1977. Ray joined St. John's in 1987, where he developed the doctoral (Psy.D.) program in School Psychology and received the University's Faculty Achievement Medal. He served as Department Chairperson from 2001 until 2014. He is presently a Professor in the psychology department, chairperson of the University's Institutional Review Board (a federally mandated Research Ethics Committee), and director of the Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology.

Ray received the Jack Krasner Early Career Contribution Award from APA's Division of Psychotherapy (29). He was elected a fellow of the American Psychological Association's divisions of Psychotherapy (29), Clinical Psychology (12), School Psychology (16), and Family Psychology (41). He served two terms as a representative and then one term as chair of Division 29's Publication Board. He then was elected president of Division 29 - the Society of the Advancement of Psychotherapy in 2014.

Ray has been active in the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy (ABCT). He helped develop the Diplomat in Behavioral Psychology (1986-1987) and served on the Diplomat board. Ray was the ABCT associate program chair (1995) and program chair (1996). He served as ABCT convention coordinator (1997-2000) and associate convener for the 2001 World Congress for Behavior Therapy. Dr. DiGiuseppe was elected ABCT representative-at-large in 2001 and served as President in 2006-2007.

Ray is one of the world's leading experts on anger as a clinical problem. He has co-authored with Chip Tafrate the book Understanding Anger Disorders, the Anger Disorder Scale, and the Anger Regulation and Expression Scale. He is a Distinguished Diplomate of the National Anger Management Association (NAMA).

Ray is a world-renowned expert in Rational-Emotive Therapy. Since 1980, he has served as Director of Professional Education at the Albert Ellis Institute, where he worked with the famous psychologist Albert Ellis from 1975 until he died in 2007. Ray has trained hundreds of therapists in REBT and CBT throughout the world. He is the co-editor of the Journal of Rational-Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapies and co-authored the Practitioners Guide to Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy, now in its third edition.

He has four children, Matthew, Daniel, Thomas, and Anna, and two grandchildren, Jack and Eloise. Ray loves to cook Italian food and makes great risotto, pizza, and pasta.

His academic geneaology, which appears below, goes back to the founding of psychology to Wilhelm Wundt.
