From Head Student Manager to Successful Intern: Faith Moy’s Path in Sport Management
Like many first-year students, when Faith Moy arrived at St. John’s University from the small town of Elmsford, NY, she wasn’t sure which direction she wanted her academic and professional life to take.

“My experience as a student manager has significantly shaped my future,” she explained. “I’ve built valuable connections and gained exposure to high-level sports operations, including working with the BIG EAST Conference at Madison Square Garden during the Men’s Basketball Tournament.”
“I chose St. John’s because of its wide range of majors and academic options,” she explained. “Being close to New York City was super important to me because I’ve always loved the city.”
Now a senior majoring in Sport Management, Faith has clearly made the right choice. She recently completed an internship with the Brooklyn Pickleball Team of Major League Pickleball and has returned this semester as Head Women’s Basketball Manager for the Red Storm.
“I chose to work with the St. John’s Women’s Basketball program because of my love of sports,” she said. “Coming into St. John’s, I had no clue what I wanted to do. After seeing a post from the Women’s Basketball team about working as a manager, I applied and have been working with the team since my first year, where I have gained valuable input and experience.”
She steadily rose through the program, eventually earning the position of Head Student Manager. The role gave her a front-row seat to the inner workings of a Division I athletics program and provided her with the opportunity to take on meaningful responsibilities.
As Head Student Manager, she collaborates with the coaching staff and recruiting coordinators, helps set up practices, and tracks performance data. On game days, she coordinates with visiting teams, manages logistics, and oversees communication between student managers, coaches, and staff. She also ran the team’s dedicated manager social media account, building visibility for the behind-the-scenes efforts.
“My experience as a student manager has significantly shaped my future,” she explained. “I’ve built valuable connections and gained exposure to high-level sports operations, including working with the BIG EAST Conference at Madison Square Garden during the Men’s Basketball Tournament.”
Faith’s involvement extends beyond the court, as she is an active member of the Women in Sports Club.
While basketball is her first love, Faith broadened her perspective this past summer when she interned with the Brooklyn Pickleball Team’s Marketing and Operations team. Pickleball has been recognized as the fastest-growing sport in the United States.
Throughout the summer, she was involved in event management, fan engagement, and brand partnerships, supporting the team’s first watch party. She played a key role in the team’s collaboration with lululemon, which involved the construction of a pickleball court inside the brand’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
“Prior to my internship, I was focused solely on pursuing a career in basketball operations, but now I’m open to opportunities across all sports,” she explained. “I’ve come to recognize the many similarities in operations, regardless of the sport.”
Moy credits her Sport Management coursework with helping her feel prepared for the internship, especially the guidance she received from Adjunct Professor Edward J. Manetta ’77SVC.
“Professor Manetta really helped me during this internship,” she said. “He helped prepare me for the initial interview and taught me lots about sponsorship deals, which helped when I was searching for team sponsors.”
That combination of classroom knowledge and real-world experience has given her a strong foundation for a future in sports operations. “With my long-term goal to work in sports operations, I truly value the opportunity to gain broader experience in sports I am not familiar with, such as pickleball,” she said. “Developing a well-rounded perspective across different sports is highly rewarding, and the chance to contribute at the professional level is both exciting and meaningful to me.”
After graduation, Faith hopes to take the next step by working as a graduate assistant with a women’s basketball program or by securing a position in sports operations. “I’ve learned so much from every step of this journey,” she said. “Each opportunity has shown me that I belong in this field, and I’m excited to keep building my future in sports.”
