Experiential learning from the beginning

  • Students, beginning in their first semester, will have opportunities to work with children in underrepresented areas in and around New York City and Long Island.
  • Students are guided on how to navigate the certification and program requirements throughout the time in our program.
  • Students can take honors level education courses while working with world-class faculty on research projects if they so desire.
  • Opportunities to study abroad, including a full semester in Rome.
  • Students can also choose one of our many 5 year and pathway programs that lead to dual certification.

Education Core Classes

Education courses include foundations, multicultural, and methods.

A 39 credit core consisting of a mix of liberal arts, theology, and philosophy courses.

All elementary education students must complete a 30 credit, interdisciplinary core consisting of math, science, social studies, and foreign language.

All elementary education students will obtain their fingerprints, set up their TEACH accounts, and complete all mandated workshops in their first semester during EDU 101.

Certification exams will be completed prior to the start of the final two semesters.

Doctoral Graduate Overcomes Challenges to Earn Degree

Robert E. Cortes ’22Ed.D., Outreach Coordinator for Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), decided it was time to go back to school after earning his bachelor’s degree from Hunter College, and his master’s degree from Columbia University School of Social Work. Between earning his last degree and beginning his studies at St. John’s University, 17 years had passed.

Highlight

Dr. Cortes graduated with a Doctor of Education degree in Administration and Supervision at The School of Education Commencement ceremony on May 17. For his dissertation, “The Stereotype Threat Experiences of Men of Color Persisting at Community College,” he explored factors affecting the graduation, persistence, and retention rates of men of color attending community college.
