School Counseling BRIDGE
Students who have completed a 60 credit master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) have the opportunity to complete the Advanced Certificate in School Counseling Bridge program. The program is designed to provide advanced graduate students with the opportunity to earn their initial New York state certification in school counseling.

The Advanced Certificate in School Counseling Bridge program is an online program that includes both online synchronous and asynchronous classes, as well as three semesters of field work. To successfully access the program, students will need access to high-speed internet and a computer device with video and audio technology.

The program is 18 credits and begins in the spring semester only. Students complete 3-6 credits each semester to complete the program. Students must complete three semesters of field work in a K-12 school setting during the program. The three semesters of field work must be in two separate K-12 settings (elementary and secondary) during school day hours. Field work experience includes one 100-hour practicum, and two 300-hour internship.
Please note: Students who completed a 48-credit master’s degree in School Counseling and are seeking an additional 12 credits would not be appropriate for the Advanced Certificate in School Counseling Bridge program. These students are invited to contact the chair for additional information.

Admissions
Admissions requirements include:
- Successful completion of a 60-credit master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, that encompasses the 8 CACREP core areas. Successful completion at the graduate level typically includes a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Master’s degrees in other specializations cannot be considered. Students who lack coursework in CACREP areas may be able to utilize a program elective to fulfill these requirements.
- A personal statement explaining their desire to pursue School Counseling initial certification.
- Two letters of recommendation
- Interview with faculty
- Flexibility to engage in three semesters of daytime field work in two separate K-12 settings (elementary and secondary) during their program, including one 100-hour practicum, and two 300-hour internships.

- Counselor Education Student Handbook: Before beginning your academic program, students must review the Counselor Education Student Handbook (PDF). Students will be required to sign a verification document indicating that the handbook was reviewed.
- School Counseling Practicum and Internship Handbook (PDF): School Counseling students will typically begin their field experiences in the second semester where they will take their practicum class. It is imperative that this handbook be read prior to registering for the practicum as it contains information about the roles and responsibilities of students and supervisors.

The School Counseling Program consists of a 60-credit Master of Science in Education degree, which prepares counselors-in-training for fulfilling the roles of the urban school counselors serving elementary, middle, and high school students in grades K-12 in the areas of academic, personal/social, and career development, according to the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA’s) new vision.
