This 33 credits research and standards-based graduate program is intended for those educators who wish to obtain a Master’s of Science Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

This program addresses the needs of educators interested in working with linguistically and culturally diverse learners. The focus is on creative and critical pedagogy and best teaching practices with socially just awareness as well as multi-modal curriculum design and planning for ENL (English as a New Language) students. Coursework addresses many critical areas and major policies and program models such as the dual language approach, the psychology and sociology of teaching linguistically diverse students, appropriate assessment instruments for planning instruction and ensuring progress, individualizing instruction for special education and all students, incorporating technology and creative classroom applications, exemplary clinical/field experiences to develop reflective teaching and planning practices. Our 11-course sequence prepares candidates to become professional, competent, caring and multicultural educators of English Language Learners (ELLs).

This program is offered entirely online.
In order to earn the certificate, students must complete the 33-graduate education courses within the program, pass the New York State Content Specialty Test (CST) in TESOL and possess 12-credits in a world language. Any deficient world language credits can be fulfilled while enrolled in the program.

In addition, the following are required for admission:
- A Bachelor’s degree
- Official college transcripts showing a B (3.0 GPA) or better average
- New York State initial teacher certification. Candidates who do not hold initial certification and desire to obtain NYS certification should apply to the joint M.S. Ed. program in Childhood Education or Adolescent Education and TESOL.
- International students or students who do not wish to obtain NYS certification are not required to hold initial certification
- Proficiency in English: Students who have international academic credentials must demonstrate proficiency in English at the start of the program by passing oral language, and written reading and writing proficiency tests in English administered by the University's ESL Department. Students who do not demonstrate adequate English language proficiency will be required to take ESL course work to bring their English language proficiency to the required level, as recommended by the ESL Director. Such coursework will not be used to meet a program prerequisite and will not count towards meeting the credits required for the TESOL degree.

Career Outcomes
The program prepares graduates to teach English as a New Language (ENL) in New York State classrooms as push-in/pull-out teachers or in stand -alone classrooms and in dual language classrooms, when combined with an additional education certification. Our coursework enables candidates to successfully navigate the challenges of working with students from various cultures who speak a variety of languages. Students completing this program can also teach ENL/EFL students in schools and college programs abroad or within the United States.
