St. John’s University’s Italian Cultural Center (ICC) offers scholarships that enable students to study abroad at the University’s Rome, Italy, campus and experience Italian culture and everyday life. This year, two students from The School of Education were selected as scholarship recipients.
“We are so grateful to the ICC for their support,” stressed Mary Ann Maslak, Ph.D., Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, The School of Education. “The scholarship helps our students with tuition fees and travel costs. This enables them to travel throughout Italy and discover the unique landscape, language, and culinary offerings of different regions. In addition, the scholarship supports cultural activities. Students can purchase concert and art exhibit tickets. These additional opportunities help them to learn about Rome’s performing art scene and visual art collections.”
Childhood Education major Gianna Ferriso, a sophomore, was interested in Italy because it had been her dream to visit her family’s homeland. “Italy is historic, yet futuristic, serene, yet lively,” Ms. Ferriso observed. “It is the best place to study abroad.”
Gianna Fricano, also a sophomore Childhood Education major, noted that her interest in studying abroad stemmed from her Sicilian background. “I am so excited, proud, and grateful to be one of this year’s scholarship award winners,” she said. “It has been my lifelong dream to travel to Italy, and I am diving into this new environment and creating great memories.”
Ms. Fricano added, “A next-door neighbor or the person across from you can become a new friend if you start a conversation with them.” Many of the new friends she has met in Rome have never studied abroad, so they are also experiencing everything for the first time.
On weekends, Ms. Fricano travels throughout Italy and to other countries. “I am constantly meeting new people and creating new relationships, which has been one of my favorite experiences.”
She introduces herself to those who work at the cafes, pizzerias, and restaurants and notes they have been amiable and helpful as she seeks a deeper understanding of the Italian language and culture. “These kind gestures have made me feel very welcome and comfortable,” Ms. Fricano said. “I now consider Rome and the campus my new home.”
Ms. Fricano teaches at Pistelli Elementary School, helping English language learners and drafting lesson plans. “Creating engaging activities and lessons keeps the students interested and excited to learn English,” she explained. “Implementing art into the lessons/activities also allows the students to be creative with their ideas. As a result, the students can make meaningful connections.”
Ms. Ferriso also teaches at Pistelli Elementary School. “The ICC scholarship has allowed me to immerse myself in the beautiful Italian culture by teaching alongside professionals and forming connections with locals. I will forever cherish the connections, friendships, opportunities, and memories I am making while studying abroad in Italy. This experience will forever be a part of who I am.”
