In a time of continued economic uncertainty and global crisis, donors to St. John’s University helped to establish a record-breaking year for annual giving. From June 1, 2021, through May 31, 2022, St. John’s received $28,562,224 in cash, eclipsing last year’s record of $28,465,562 (which included a single bequest of seven million dollars)—and marking the most successful year for annual fundraising in the University’s 152-year history. In addition, St. John’s recorded a total of $17.35 million in pledges in fiscal year (FY) 2022, compared to $6.12 million in pledges in FY 2021.

“I am so grateful to the St. John’s community of alumni, parents, friends, and institutional supporters who make our University a priority for their philanthropy,” stated Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President. “St. John’s provides a transformative education to students from all backgrounds, and especially to those who may not have the financial resources from home to attend college. Through our donors’ generous support, we are strengthening the University for current and future generations of students who will become leaders in our region, our nation, and around the world.”

The following are just a few of the Institutional Advancement highlights from FY22.

  • Six gifts were received of one million dollars or more.

  • Serving as the University’s premier fundraising event of the year, the 24th annual President’s Dinner saw more than $3.1 million raised—including over $235,000 at the dinner itself. The 25th Annual Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, October 27, at the New York Hilton Midtown.

  • The 26th Annual Insurance Leader of the Year Dinner raised more than $2.45 million in funds for students at the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science, part of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s. Included in the total dollars raised is more than $780,000 in support of the Tricia Griffith St. John’s University Endowed Scholarship for Women in Insurance.

  • Athletic fundraising reached its second highest level in school history with a total of $3,666,723.81 in cash. This marks the third time in the past six years that the Athletic Development team has surpassed three million dollars.

  • The Athletics Department set a record in the total number of donors (1,580) Red White Club members (1,378) and Champion Partners (64).

Members of The Loughlin Society are the University’s most generous donors. Named in honor of Most Rev. John Loughlin, the first Bishop of Brooklyn, this St. John’s leadership giving society is open to donors who contribute gifts totaling $1,000 or more toward any University fund during the fiscal year. Its members work to ensure that St. John’s will always be able to provide deserving students with a superior, affordable education. Their gifts support such important priorities as student scholarships, academic programming, upgraded campus facilities, enhanced technology, and faculty research. In FY22, Loughlin Society membership increased from 1,589 to 1,811.

The McCallen Society is a community of generous alumni, benefactors, and friends who demonstrate their commitment to the University by including St. John’s in their estate plans. Their planned gifts fund scholarships, programs, and initiatives, as well as University enhancements and facilities upgrades needed to ensure student success. During FY22, membership in The McCallen Society increased from 759 members to 782.

“On behalf of everyone at St. John’s, I want to express how grateful we are for the extraordinary support received this year,” stated Christian P. Vaupel, Ed.D., Vice President for Advancement and University Relations. “These results are made possible by the continued generosity of St. John’s alumni, friends of the University, parents, corporations, and foundations. The ultimate beneficiaries of our donors’ support and St. John’s mission and vision are our talented and dedicated students.”
