Professor to be Honored at Fulbright Event

The School of Education at St. John’s University proudly recognizes Michael R. Sampson, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Education Specialties, for being honored as one of Fulbright’s distinguished alumni and a children’s author who has reached readers around the world.

“Dr. Sampson’s achievement is more than a milestone—it is a moment of pride, inspiration, and global recognition for the entire St. John’s University community,” said John Spiridakis, Ph.D., Professor and Chair in the Department of Education Specialties.

As one of Fulbright’s distinguished alumni and a celebrated children’s author whose stories have reached readers across continents, he will be honored at the Fulbright 80th Anniversary celebration in Washington, DC, on October 22. This national distinction affirms the extraordinary reach of his scholarship, the power of his leadership, and the enduring influence of his contributions to literacy and education worldwide.

Dr. Sampson stated, “I am proud that my research and work have been selected to be honored by Fulbright. Being a Fulbright Scholar had been a lifelong dream of mine, and the reality of serving in Ukraine and teaching at a university in Dnipro, Ukraine, exceeded all hopes and expectations.  I am also proud that my book “The Story of Ukraine” has been so impactful as Ukraine fights to keep its democracy and freedom.”

His work will be showcased as a model of excellence within the Fulbright community—a testament to his unwavering commitment to advancing cross‑cultural understanding, global collaboration, and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Dr. Sampson’s career continues to shape students, educators, and international partners, leaving a legacy defined by curiosity, creativity, and a profound belief in the transformative power of literacy.
