St. John’s University proudly announces that its state-of-the-art St. Vincent Health Sciences Center has officially achieved LEED Gold certification, recognizing the facility’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmentally responsible design.
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold designation, awarded by the US Green Building Council, places the St. Vincent Health Sciences Center among an elite group of high-performance academic facilities nationwide. The certification reflects the University’s dedication to creating innovative spaces that support both student success and environmental stewardship.
“This milestone underscores St. John’s commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of our campus development,” said Jacques Theus, Associate Vice President, Campus Facilities and Services at St. John’s. “The St. Vincent Health Sciences Center is more than a building—it is a symbol of our mission to advance health education while reducing our environmental footprint. We are proud to provide our students and faculty with a dynamic, forward-thinking environment that reflects our values.”
The new, energy-efficient building features active learning classrooms, laboratories, simulation facilities, office space, collaborative spaces, and outdoor terraces. Constructed to be environmentally friendly, sustainability features include geothermal heating/cooling, rooftop solar panels, and high-performance windows designed to reduce thermal loss and bird incident friendly.
Work on the 70,000-square-foot facility began in early 2022. It opened for classes in Fall 2024 and is home to students in the University’s Nursing, Radiologic Sciences, and Physician Assistant programs.
Designed in collaboration with CannonDesign, the facility incorporates advanced energy systems, sustainable materials, and innovative design strategies that reduce resource consumption while enhancing occupant well-being.
“We are honored to partner with St. John’s University on a project that exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate both human health and environmental performance,” said Krista Wayne, Sustainable Design Lead at CannonDesign. “Achieving LEED Gold certification for the St. Vincent Health Sciences Center demonstrates what’s possible when institutions prioritize sustainability and innovation from the outset.”
The St. Vincent Health Sciences Center supports interdisciplinary learning across nursing, public health, and allied health programs. Its modern labs, simulation spaces, and collaborative classrooms prepare students to address today’s most pressing health-care challenges—all within a building designed to meet tomorrow’s environmental standards.
The building features a holistic and scalable approach to sustainability. It supports a series of campus and New York City sustainability initiatives and contributes to the University’s carbon reduction efforts.
The building was also featured in an award-winning short documentary directed and produced by Elijah Croom ’25CCPS. The 15-minute film, St. Vincent Health Sciences Center, describes the origin and impact of the state-of-the-art academic building.
