The St. John’s University community will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11 with prayer and remembrance. The focus of the events scheduled at the Queens and Staten Island, NY, campuses is to prayerfully mark the passage of two decades since the day that changed the University and the world. With prayer, the tolling of bells, and reflection, the University will remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost on September 11, including 75 members of the St. John’s family who perished that day.

A centerpiece of the 9/11 commemoration at the Staten Island campus is the return of the United in Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt that will be on public display from September 10 through 12 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Each block of this 16,000-square-foot quilt is a personalized dedication to a 9/11 victim. More than 3,000 volunteers from 17 countries had a hand in making the quilt, and it has since been on display throughout the United States. This marks the third time that the quilt will be displayed at the Staten Island campus.

In hailing the return of the United in Memory 9/11 Victims Memorial Quilt to St. John’s University, Joseph Sciame ’71Ed, Vice President, Community Relations, stated: “We are again honored, and indeed humbled, to host the 9/11 quilt. In such an exhibition, we can convey our observations, thoughts, and prayers for the great sacrifice of life that occurred.”

As we pause to honor the lives that were lost, all are encouraged to share their personal stories and reflections of the events of September 11.
