







Offered every spring semester through the Bachelor of Science degree program in Hospitality Management at St. John’s University, the International Cuisines class includes a trip abroad where students learn firsthand many aspects of the hospitality industry, including travel and tourism, food and beverage, hotel operations, resort management, international destinations, and culture.
This year, the agenda included travel to both Rome and Bologna, Italy. The class is held at St. John’s Manhattan, NY, campus, and attracts students from the University’s other two New York campuses in Queens and on Staten Island.
“The students became friends during class—and then really bonded on the trip held over spring break,” said April M. Merenda, Assistant Professor/Industry Professional, Administration and Economics. “It reinforced our mantra, ‘We are St. John’s.’"
Thanks to a scholarship fund established by a St. John’s alumnus, the University’s College of Professional Studies covers the cost of airfare. Students experienced the beautiful four-star Hotel Mascagni, located in the historic center of Rome and within walking distance to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. During the trip, students were surprised with an evening at the five-star Parco Dei Principi Grand Hotel & Spa, where they were treated to a tasting dinner menu and were given the opportunity to see the famous Presidential Suite. While in Bologna, students visited Eataly Ristorante and FICO Eataly World headquarters, and were housed at the four-star Zanhotel Tre Vecchi, centrally located in the heart of the city.
"Attending the International Cuisines class with a study abroad component opened up endless opportunities for me in the hospitality management industry,” said Raquel Goncalves, who plans to graduate in 2020. “This trip motivated me to continue my education at St. John’s by pursuing a master’s degree in International Hospitality Management.”
