New York Fashion Week has taken over New York City these past two weeks. On September 13, 2018, students from St. John's University had the opportunity to attend The Journey Fashion Show with Dr. Andrea Licari, who is the director of The Fashion Institute and ten of her St. John’s University Fashion Studies students. This event was part of Fashion Week 2018 and was hosted by Malena Belafonte, Harry Belafonte’s daughter-in Law, In Symphony Space, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan,
“Designers from around the world, showcasing their newest collections in a creatively choreographed new show format that includes dancers and singers, alongside haute couture. The Journey Fashion Festival is listed on the CFDA’s Fashion Calendar and will close out New York Fashion Week’s September season. The show takes the audience on an exciting journey into the fascinating world of Fashion Week inclusive of press, editors, bloggers and buyers who are all among the invited guests at Symphony Space.”
Indeed, this fashion show was not like any other; it included eight major designers, two Trapeze Artist performances (Kritstin Olness) and a National Dance Institute performance (Jonny Rosario and Sarafina Belafonte). Models of all ages, including children walked in gowns, suits, lingerie and for Spring 2019 the designers included clothing from ESTE & CHLO, Henry Picado, Minan Wong, Egami Collection, Get Checked, Maryam Albouanin, Gatito Sucio, and Yeroc (who closed the show with a choreographed performance).
At this same event St. John’s was proud to say we had about 12 students who were interning and learning how to organize this event. They were assisting in coordinating the eight major designer and dealing with the issues that come up before the event. They were able to see the results of their input as the crowd of over 800 were overjoyed! Bravo!
