Discover New York

Faculty members develop DNY courses around the application of their own academic disciplines, employing these disciplines as the conceptual lenses to address the general framework defining DNY’s educational goals. As a result, students have the opportunity to “see” New York City through a particular academic perspective including those focused on the arts, business, social and political relationships, literature, and media in the city.

With a continual emphasis on critical thinking and information literacy skills as the primary pedagogy of learning, the city becomes the laboratory for the students’ application of the course focus. Moreover, with the course mandate for Academic Service-Learning, students experience the city as a place populated with “real people,” many of whom live in difficult situations and need assistance.

Student Development DNY

Student Development collaborates with the Institute for Core Studies administration and faculty to provide three out-of-class experiences for your DNY course. You will have the opportunity to learn about New York City through various perspectives (e.g., the arts, business, politics, religion) while exploring and enjoying the most exciting city in the world.

Some of the places you may have the opportunity to visit may include museums (e.g., Metropolitian Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum) live shows (e.g., Broadway), New York Stock Exchange, United Nations, the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, Ellis Island, the Statue of liberty, and many more.

As part of Discover New York, you will also have direct access to a DNY Peer Leader, current student who are extremely involved on campus. They go through an intensive selection process and are then assigned to each course to assist the faculty and to serve as a resource and familiar face during your transition to the St. Johns community.

Our Programs

The Coffee Connections program provides an opportunity for our first-year students to grab a snack or cup of coffee with one of their esteemed faculty members throughout the semester.

Although starting college can be intimidating as a first year student, there are many opportunities to make a new connection. Students are encouraged to invite faculty members to Starbucks on campus and engage in different conversations that don’t always occur in the classroom. Coffee Connections opens the door for students and faculty to discuss a wide array of topics ranging from current events around the world to goals and plans for the future.

The program is absolutely free to the students and faculty, as we aim to increase engagement outside of the classroom and help develop new connections and relationships along the way.

How It Works

  1. The student must work with the professor to choose a date and time first, before signing up for a voucher
    • Coffee Connection must occur between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday
    • Once a date and time have been confirmed by both the student and professor, set a reminder so you don’t forget!
  2. The student and professor should meet for the Coffee Connection appointment in DAC 213
    • In DAC 213, the student will sign in and then receive two $5 vouchers (one for the student and one for the professor)
  3. Enjoy the coffee/snack on us!
