When Kate Smith, an International Hospitality Management major in The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies, graduates in May with her master’s degree, she will include an internship with Skyline Cruises on her résumé—giving her an edge over other applicants as she enters the competitive hospitality job market.
A three-credit internship requirement is included in this program to ensure students gain some real-world experience prior to graduation. April M. Merenda, Assistant Professor/Industry Professional, Division of Administration and Economics, and Director, M.S. program in International Hospitality Management, helped Kate secure her internship.
“Gaining real-life experience in the industry is so valuable while earning a degree,” Prof. Merenda said.
The Skyline Princess is a unique “floating restaurant” venue that serves as a catering hall and versatile event space for up to 450 people. The yacht sails from the World’s Fair Marina in Queens, NY, and offers guests breathtaking views of the New York City skyline and Statue of Liberty.
“It’s all about relaxing and enjoying the view, and dining comfortably with family and friends,” Kate explained.
As part of Kate’s internship, she worked with other interns to host a networking event at the end of March that included more than 100 business representatives from the five boroughs and Long Island.
“We had such a great day,” Kate said. “Even though the weather was inclement, the turnout was amazing. Guests enjoyed a buffet in a comfortable setting to discuss their event and social gathering needs. While much of the conversation focused on the delicious food, we all enjoyed conversation focused on topics relevant to those in the hospitality field.”
