St. John’s University demonstrated the true meaning of community partnership as the Department of Public Safety and The School of Education (TSOE) came together for the Pack the Patrol Car School Supply Drive.
What began as a simple call for donations quickly grew into a powerful expression of generosity and shared purpose. A patrol car was filled with notebooks, crayons, folders, backpacks, and other essentials—each item representing the generosity of university community members who believe in the potential of young learners.
“The overwhelming support for this initiative reflects the generosity of our community,” said James D. Wolfinger, Ph. D., Dean of the School of Education, St. John’s University. “Every donation supports families and educators who may be in difficult circumstances. We are grateful to see the St. John’s community come together in support of this important effort.”
When volunteers arrived at Holy Family Catholic Academy in Fresh Meadows, NY, students greeted them with excitement and wide smiles. Principal Anne Kelly accepted the donations on behalf of the school, noting how these supplies will help students begin the year with confidence, creativity, and the tools they need to thrive.
“Every child deserves to walk into their classroom feeling safe, ready, and confident. A pencil or a notebook might seem small, but to a student it can make all the difference in how they start the year. Our job is to help people feel secure, and for these students, it means knowing their community is looking out for them. Our department was proud to be part of that, “said Dan Rhone, Chief of Public Safety in the Department of Public Safety at St. John’s University.
Ms. Anne Kelly, Principal, added, “Holy Family Catholic Academy is filled with gratitude for the incredible success of last week’s event. We extend our heartfelt thanks to St. John’s University, especially the Deans, event coordinators, and the entire St. John's community for their unwavering support and continued partnership with our school. The 'Pack the Patrol Car' initiative was an absolute hit! Our children have already benefited tremendously from the generous donations, which directly support their growth and vibrant learning environment. We also want to send a very special thank you to Johnny Thunderbird, who brought an abundance of laughter, energy, and pure joy to our students, making the day absolutely unforgettable!"
This effort was made possible by dedicated volunteers from Public Safety and the School of Education, Dean’s Office, administrators from the Institute for Catholic Schools, members of the St. John’s branch of Future Catholic School Teachers, and members of the Women’s Soccer team. Their teamwork ensured every box was packed, transported, and delivered with care. Johnny Thunderbird’s visit to each classroom added an unforgettable spark of joy.
The event concluded with a shared sense of gratitude, reinforcing the belief that together, communities can create meaningful change and support one another through acts of generosity, compassion, and service.
