Dean Jerrold Ross Conference Room Unveiled

December 11, 2025

On Tuesday, December 10,  the newly renovated conference room on the fifth floor of Sullivan Hall was dedicated in honor of Jerrold Ross, Ph.D., former Dean of The School of Education. The renovation was made possible by a generous gift from his partner, Bob Harrod and family.

The occasion brought together friends and family of Dr. Ross, along with faculty, administrators, and staff, who all came out to show their appreciation and love. The blessing was done by Fr. Hugo A. Medellin, Campus Minister for Faith Formation.

Dr. Ross, who passed away on February 1, 2024, was the longest-tenured dean of the School of Education, serving in that role from 1995 until 2014. He was also Academic Vice President of the Staten Island, NY, campus. Dr. Ross retired as Dean Emeritus.

When asked how about his legacy, Dr. Ross once said, “I would like to be remembered for being visionary; for introducing and implementing key School of Education programs; and for spearheading innovative partnerships with private schools, corporations, governmental organizations, and other entities.”

Dr. Ross received the Distinguished Achievement Medal from St. John’s in 2006 and the President’s Medal in 2008. His commitment to higher education was renowned throughout the region, and the New York State Education Department and its Board of Regents presented him with a certificate commemorating his 50 years of service to the children of New York State in 2008.

“Jerry made the School of Education what it is today,” said James D. Wolfinger, Ph.D., Dean, The School of Education. “He was a remarkable man who understood the power of education in a community like Queens and lived our Vincentian mission every day. It is a distinct honor to name this conference room for a man who distinguished himself every day with his commitment to education.”

Dr. Ross’s legacy was always a part of the School of Education, the conference room just serves as a concrete reminder of what he meant and continues to mean to our School.
