Institute for Catholic Schools Hosts Successful Workshop for Catholic Educators

May 14, 2025

A professional development opportunity designed to equip Catholic educators with the knowledge and strategies to support students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and executive function challenges was hosted by the Institute for Catholic Schools (ICS) at St. John’s University on May 10.

The ADHD Executive Function Workshop was led by Bonni S. Cohen, Ed.D., a nationally recognized ADHD parent coach and teacher trainer. Drawing on her expertise in supporting neurodiverse learners, Dr. Cohen engaged participants in an interactive session exploring the connection between ADHD and executive function skills—key cognitive processes that influence students’ learning, behavior, and motivation.

Participants examined eight core executive function skills and discussed how deficits in these areas affect classroom performance. The workshop provided actionable strategies for enhancing student engagement, improving structured and unstructured learning environments, and creating low-stress classroom settings that allow all learners to thrive. Emphasis was placed on designing classroom structures that foster attention, participation, and academic success for students with executive function challenges.

Katherine C. Aquino, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Innovation and Partnership at The School of Education at St. John’s University, emphasized the importance of such opportunities. “The success of the recent ADHD Executive Function Workshop highlights our deep commitment to supporting Catholic educator partners through meaningful, research-informed, professional development. Equipping educators with practical strategies enhances student learning and reflects our shared mission of service and excellence.”

She added, “As a University, we are proud to collaborate with our local dioceses, fostering growth and connection across our communities. These workshops exemplify our dedication to empowering educators and advancing inclusive, mission-aligned educational practices.”

Robert A. DiNardo, Director of the Institute for Catholic Schools, echoed the value of the workshop. “Dr. Cohen is an expert on ADHD and Executive Function Disorder and her presentation was found to be very beneficial to the educators who attended. St. John’s will continue to host these kinds of professional development events in the future.”

He continued, “The ICS remains committed to offering relevant and high-impact learning opportunities that reflect the needs of today’s Catholic educators and students. Future professional development events will continue to focus on inclusive practices, student-centered strategies, and strengthening school communities across the region.”
