For Staten Island, NY, native John Michael Quattrache, the dream of studying law was always within sight—but the path to achieving it became clearer thanks to the Sr. Helen Flynn Endowed Scholarship. John, now a junior at St. John’s University majoring in Legal Studies, recently reflected on how this scholarship transformed his academic journey and solidified his future aspirations.
John was honored to receive the Sr. Helen Flynn Endowed Scholarship, an award offered through the collaborative efforts of the Notre Dame College Alumnae Association and University Financial Aid. It is granted to students who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need.
“The scholarship played a major role in my decision to attend St. John’s,” John shared. “It gave me the financial support to focus on my studies and take steps toward my dream of becoming a lawyer.”
Securing the award was no simple feat. John was required to submit a compelling essay articulating how the scholarship would support his legal studies. Following that, he faced a rigorous interview with a panel of seven esteemed alumnae, where he showcased his dedication, academic achievements, and deep-rooted connection to St. John’s University.
For John, St. John’s isn’t just a University—it’s part of his family’s history. His mother and several relatives proudly attended the Staten Island campus, which closed in 2024. Fond memories of campus life, which included attending Christmas celebrations with his grandmother, who worked at the University, made St. John’s feel like home long before he became a student.
“When I was being interviewed for the scholarship, I truly believe my connection to St. John’s gave me an edge,” John said. “Beyond my grades, my passion for the school and my commitment to my future in law resonated with the selection committee.”
Receiving the Sr. Helen Flynn Endowed Scholarship has been a game-changer for John and his family, providing financial flexibility as he prepares for his next step: law school. Every class he takes in the legal studies program brings him closer to his goal, thanks to the professors and experiences that continue to shape his understanding of the legal system.
“Without this scholarship, I don’t know if I would have been able to attend St. John’s,” John admitted. “And I truly don’t know if I would be in the position I am today.”
As he looks ahead to law school and beyond, John carries with him not just the knowledge he’s gained at St. John’s, but the gratitude for the scholarship that helped make it all possible. His story is a testament to the power of education, opportunity, and the enduring legacy of giving back.
