Rebeka Humbrecht, a senior Ozanam Scholar majoring in Communication Arts and English on the Staten Island, NY, campus of St. John’s University, was awarded the Vice Provost Research Award in Community-Based Research. This was the top prize awarded at the University’s virtual Mentored Student Research Forum on April 12.

Rebekah’s research, “Knowledge and Impact of Reusable Menstrual Products on Organizations Working with Low-Income Persons Who Menstruate,” allowed her to interact with the Staten Island community and provide resources to assist a minority demographic in the area.

“Her project not only shed light on the need for resources for low-income menstruating individuals on Staten Island, but also provided educational training for employees working with this population,” said her advisor, Nancy DiTunnariello, Ph.D., Director of Communication Arts, Staten Island campus. “It is a shining example of how our students seek to promote our University’s mission of service to those less fortunate.”

The forum was part of Research Month activities held in April. This year’s series of research events were especially significant as the University celebrates its 150th Anniversary under the theme, “Faithful to the Mission.”
