Government & Politics Student Serves Vulnerable Seniors During COVID-19

Senior citizens are one of the most at-risk populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a consultant with Bankers Conseco Life Insurance Company in the Bronx, NY, Government and Politics graduate student Michael Forson serves on the front lines of protecting this vulnerable group. In his role, he helps senior citizens navigate Medicare and ensures they can access benefits. During the pandemic, Michael’s relationship with his clients has become more important than ever. 

Michael works with most of his clients over Zoom, but makes house calls for those who don’t have access to internet. He has even purchased food for clients when he notices they don’t have any at home. He wears personal protective equipment (PPE) during these visits and doesn’t let concerns for his own health interfere with his call to serve. 

“I see myself as a soldier in the war against COVID-19,” he said. “I will do whatever I have to do to save lives.”

Michael, who was raised by his grandmother in Ghana, feels a special connection to the seniors for whom he is a life-saving resource and guide. 

“It’s all about trust,” he said. “When your client trusts you, they’re able to ask you questions. Then you can give them information so they can make their own choices.”

He sees his graduate studies as deeply connected to the work he does every day, and often encourages his clients to develop political awareness to better their circumstances. 

“Here in the United States, we have opportunities, but we must shape those opportunities by voting. We must think, ‘how will this affect future generations?’”

Previously, Michael was a Client Support Professional at HMEA, an organization that offers education and support for people with developmental disabilities and their families. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History from Worcester State University.
