All 17 Red Storm varsity teams finished with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

For the first time in University history, St. John’s student-athletes recorded a department-wide average grade point average (GPA) of 3.42 during the Fall 2019 semester.
“What an amazing fall semester for our entire body of student-athletes—in the classroom, with all 17 sports earning over a 3.0 GPA—and on the playing fields, with a Big East volleyball title and a Sweet 16 Men’s Soccer performance,” said Mike Cragg, Director of Athletics.
Nearly 260 Johnnies, 81 percent of the student-athlete population, recorded a 3.0 or better GPA this past fall. Of those 258, 176 turned in at least a 3.5 GPA, while 44 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester.
“I am so excited about the academic success of our student-athletes,” said Associate Athletics Director for Student Services Eric Rienecker. “There are so many demands on student-athletes today, far beyond just practices, travel, strength and conditioning, and competition. By successfully balancing both academics and athletics, our student-athletes truly exemplify the meaning of the term ‘student-athlete.’”
All 17 of the program’s teams recorded at least a 3.0 GPA, while seven squads turned in a team-wide average of 3.5 or better, led by women’s soccer and women’s tennis at 3.73.
“Our student-athletes continue to demonstrate the determination to succeed,” Mr. Cragg added. “They are expertly guided and assisted by our coaches, administrators, and the incredible academic support group led by Eric Rienecker. We have so much of which to be proud.”
