The BIG EAST selected 222 St. John's student-athletes to its 2018-19 All-Academic Team, the league announced Tuesday morning.
The St. John's athletic department shattered its previously-held record for the most honorees in a single academic year, surpassing 2016's mark of 203 student-athletes.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member schools and affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There are 2,938 honorees for the 2018-19 academic year, the highest total in the six years since realignment.
For the 2018-19 school year, the Red Storm lacrosse team led all St. John's squads with 35 honorees. The track & field/cross country team was a close second with 34. Baseball rounded out the top three placing 30 student-athletes on the All-Academic list. Twenty-nine members of the women's soccer team were honored, while 22 men's soccer, 19 softball and 12 volleyball student athletes garnered the recognition.
The women's tennis program placed nine on the All-Academic Team. The men's tennis and men's golf squads each placed eight student-athletes on the list, while women's golf featured seven. Women's and men's basketball rounded out the ledger with six and three honorees, respectively.
