In anticipation for the establishment of the College of Professional Studies’ new Institute of Interdisciplinary Research, Dean Passerini sent a delegation of Sport Management students, alumni and\ faculty to the 2018 Women in Sport and Events’ (WISE), Women of the Year Luncheon.

Much like WISE, the new institute dedicates part of its focus to research and activities that are geared towards the advancement of women in sport science and management, making it only apt for St. John’s University to be represented at the WISE awards. WISE celebrates the accomplishments of trailblazing women in the business of sports and proponents of the movement. The 2018 award honorees: Lindsay Amstutz, (General Manager of Fox Sports), Kim Stone (Executive Vice President of Miami Heat) and Sarah Robb O’Hagan (CEO of Flywheel Sports), blessed all in attendance with valuable stories of perseverance, struggles and victory. Their words of wisdom inspired our young women to continue pursuing excellence and dreaming beyond their circumstances. The awards were capped with a speech from the WISE Champion Award recipient Masai Ujiri (General Manager of The Toronto Raptors). Mr. Ujiri’s story resonated with our international students and alumni, as he delivered a teary account of his journey from Nigeria to the North American sport industry. His tale was, laden with precious acknowledgement of the plethora of women that blessed him along the way with support and life changing opportunities.

As the Institute of Interdisciplinary Sport Research (IISR) grows in its capacity, we hope to not only continue in our support and celebration of Women’s success in the business of sport, but to also contribute to the movement through, research, events and the grooming of our very own female trailblazers.
