St. John’s University Receives Two Awards for Student Veteran Resources Named a Top-1- GOLD Award Recipient by Military Friendly® and a TOP SCHOOL by MAE&T

April 11, 2017

St. John’s has announced that it has received two distinguished awards for the outstanding resources it provides to Veterans.  The University has been chosen as a TOP SCHOOL in the 2017 MAE&T Guide to Colleges & Universities research study and has also been named a Top-10 Gold-level Military Friendly® School Award recipient for 2017 by Victory Media.

The two awards are presented to institutions with the best practices in military and veteran education support.

St. John’s has worked to ensure that its Veteran students succeed both academically and in their transition to civilian life. The Veteran’s Success Center is the resource hub designed to assist student veterans in transitioning from military service to University life by providing academic, professional, and health networking opportunities and resources, as well as community service and advocacy.

St. John’s is among a select number of schools participating in the Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership (VITAL) program through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This program brings a VA representative to campus weekly to discuss benefits and support services and brings awareness to the campus community about the Veteran presence at St. John’s.

Mary H. Pelkowski, Associate Dean for Student Engagement, serves as an advisor to St. John’s student veterans and helped establish the Veteran’s Success Center in 2015.

“St. John’s has always been committed to ensuring that all of our students succeed academically, professionally and personally, Pelkowski said. “We are proud to be able to give back to our Veteran students who have given so much in service to our country by providing these crucial resources to help ensure their continued success.”

Now in its tenth year of publishing the guide, MAE&T evaluated institutions on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, general support, on-campus support and online support services.

Victory Media considers the Top 10 Gold award recipients to be “the best of the best” in providing resources for Veterans. For more than a decade, Military Friendly® ratings have set the standard for companies and colleges demonstrating positive employment and education outcomes for veterans and their families.

“All of our Military Friendly® award recipients set the standard for excellence,” said Daniel Nichols, Chief Product Officer of Victory Media and head of Military Friendly® development. “They offer exceptional examples of what it means not just to build a program that meets federal requirements, but one that serves the military and veteran community from classrooms to careers.”
