“College is so much more than what you do inside the classroom,” said Sidney Johnson ’19CPS, as she explored the wide range of student clubs and organizations represented at St. John’s Spring Activities Fair. “A big part of my college experience has taken place in groups like these, and that has helped me figure out where I belong in the world.”

Sidney joined more than 1,200 students who attended the annual event, held on Monday, January 30, in the Taffner Field House. The Activities Fair gives resident and commuter students the opportunity to explore over 100 student organizationsrecreational activitiesclub sportsfraternities and sororities, and other options available at St. John’s.

“The Spring Activities Fair is the perfect opportunity for new and transfer students to quickly learn about all the wonderful clubs and organizations that St. John’s has to offer,” said Kathryn Hutchinson, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs. “It is also a great way for continuing students to branch out and connect with groups that support their interests.”

Being involved with a club fosters a heightened sense of responsibility, according to Joanna Diaz ’17TCB, President of St. John’s Marketing Club. “It takes a lot to run an organization on campus,” she said. “In my case, it’s almost like taking another class. However, since there’s a lot of collaboration with other organizations, administrators, and faculty, it can really benefit you socially and professionally.”

While some students came in search of social or recreational activities, Nadine Yamout ’20P came in search of an organization that could complement her professional goals. “I’ve heard great things about the Physician Assistant Association, so I’d like to get involved with that,” she said. “It’s important to share the college experience with other people. It makes you feel like you’re part of the community.”

Frank John Rappa ’18CPS, a member of WREDtv, came to the fair hoping to recruit new members to the University’s long-established TV club. “We usually have a really good turnout from the Spring Activity Fair,” he said. “I try to explain to prospects that WREDtv is very hands-on because it’s student-run. Most important, it’s a lot of fun.”

Like most students in attendance, Christina Golino ’19P, came to the fair with an open mind. “I want to do more on campus and try something new,” she said. “When you’re part of a group, it gives you a different perspective on things.”

Reza Moreno ’18CPS, President of St. John’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity, had similar thoughts. “The best part about the fair is the opportunity to explore new groups,” she said. “It’s always good to get outside of your comfort zone, because it can only help you grow as a person.”
