The St. John’s Athletic Department honored more than 200 student-athletes in an on-court presentation during the men’s basketball game against Xavier at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

The student-athletes were honored at halftime for earning BIG EAST All-Academic recognition for the 2015-16 academic year. Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST’s 10 member and seven affiliate institutions.

To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.

In addition to the conference’s All-Academic Team, 24 other student-athletes from the men and women’s fencing team, which do not participate in BIG EAST Conference play, also met the academic criteria for the award. The student-athletes recognized span across the majority of St. John’s 17 varsity teams.

Director of Athletics Anton Goff, Associate Vice President for Athletics Kathleen Meehan, Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Sharon See, Associate Provost Dr. Nancy S. Kaplan, and Director of Academic Support Services Eric Rienecker were present to acknowledge the student-athletes for their outstanding academic achievements.

In 2015-16, the St. John’s athletic department shattered its previously-held record for the most honorees in a single academic year, surpassing 2015’s mark of 182 student-athletes.
