Over 100 students and faculty of Tobin’s Department of Accounting and Taxation welcomed John B. Veihmeyer, chief executive officer and worldwide chairman of KPMG, during an informal fireside chat in the D’Angelo Center on Thursday, October 31, 2013.
Emphasizing the critical role of integrity and ethics in business, Veihmeyer also focused on the significance of diversity and an inclusive culture within an organization. “Diversity is metrics and culture is the biggest differentiator that anyone can have,” highlighted the prominent guest speaker.
Veihmeyer also shared examples of how his career evolved over the years, discussed how personal experiences can help you develop your own strategies to attain success and how important it is to let your professional experience guide your career path.
Dr. Victoria Shoaf, dean of the Tobin College of Business, also stressed the importance of networking as students prepare for graduation. “Developing a connection with executive professionals is extremely important so we try to give students ample opportunities during their time here to network and establish mentor relationships,” said Shoaf.
The event, moderated by assistant professor Dr. Joseph Trainor, concluded with annual Stanley Shirk and Edward Smith Scholarship Awards presented to 10 undergraduate seniors who will be transitioning into the fifth year of the accounting and taxation dual degree program.
The Department of Accounting and Taxation will host several events during the spring 2014 semester including “Meet the CFOs and Controllers,” “Meet the Internal Auditors” and their annual Accounting Academics and Service Awards Ceremony.
