- Award Luncheon Held for Students Honored in Employment (SHinE)
St. John’s University recognized an exceptional group of student workers at a Students Honored in Employment (SHinE) luncheon held in their honor on April 11 in the D’Angelo Center Ballroom.
Dozens of invited guests—including student worker honorees, their supervisors and managers, and University leaders—attended the ceremony hosted by the Office of Human Resources. The event marks the culmination of an intensive nomination and selection process recognizing excellence in student employment.
The award luncheon is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of student workers, thank supervisors for playing an active role in their students’ career development, recognize this year’s 16 semifinalists, and present four top-performing students with their SHinE awards. The presentation of awards was made by Darren Russell, Student Employment Manager, who presented each winner with a plaque, a $500 recognition award, and a personalized letter of congratulations from Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., University President.

Besides Ms. Marquez, the 2024 Selection Committee included Vanessa Bethancourt, Graduate Assistant, Office of Alumni Relations; Ellen Burti, Senior Director, Career Advising and Experiential Learning, University Career Services; Joan E. DeBello, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Division of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Science; and Dionne Dorsey, Director, Donor Relations, Office of Advancement.
Keaton Wong, J.D., Associate Vice President for the Office of Human Resources, commended the 16 semifinalists and four award recipients for their outstanding work and excellence. She recognized the members of the selection committee and thanked them for volunteering. She also acknowledged the important role of supervisors and managers as coaches and mentors who work to develop and prepare students for their chosen professions.
The nomination period for next year’s SHinE award opens in January 2025.
