Special Investigator Alumna Calls SJU Profs Her “Windows to the World” of Crime-Fighting
A typical day of work is anything but typical for Deirdre Matthews ‘12G. It might entail conducting interviews, analyzing documents, testifying in court, or executing search and arrest warrants. Matthews is a Special Investigator with the City of New York, a position she has held since 2015. She is responsible for overseeing all city agencies and anyone who does business with the city to ensure integrity. She also conducts criminal investigations of city employees regarding allegation of corruption, fraud, and official misconduct and makes policy and procedure recommendations for these agencies.

Vice Provost International Fellowship’s Trip to Rome in the New Year
St. John’s University makes a once unattainable prospect—the opportunity to travel, learn, work and serve around the world—a reality for its students. This January, students from St. John's Staten Island campus spent a week studying abroad in Rome, Italy with support from the Vice Provost International Fellowship Program. Vice Provost Fellows started their “Politics of the European Union” course with Dr. Azzedine Layachi, Professor of Government and Politics, and paid only a $500 program fee and their airfare.
English Professor Receives Prestigious Wilson Fellowship
Shanté Paradigm Smalls, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English at St. John’s University, has won a 2017 Career Enhancement Fellowship for Junior Faculty from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The fellowship is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and administered by the Wilson Foundation. It helps exceptional junior faculty achieve tenure by facilitating their scholarly research and writing during the fellowship period.
