The St. John's Athletic Department is pleased to announce the establishment of the Red Storm Basketball Social Impact Scholarship, an academic award to be presented annually to a St. John's student, with first preference given to those from historically underrepresented populations, to assist with tuition and fees based on demonstrated financial need and academic accomplishment. Each year the Red Storm Basketball Social Impact Scholarship will be awarded in the name of a member of the St. John's basketball community to recognize their positive impact on the University on and off the court.

The Red Storm Basketball Social Impact Scholarship started as a vision by Red Storm men's basketball student-athletes Greg Williams Jr. and David Caraher as a way to help address social justice issues while paying tribute those individuals who have proudly represented St. John's Basketball. Thanks to the generosity of St. John's Board of Trustees member James Shannon '87 CBA and his wife Anissa Shannon '89 SVC, '91 Ed, the Red Storm Basketball Social Impact Scholarship was created by way of the Shannons' leadership gift for the new endowment.

"I am so proud of Greg and David for their desire to enact positive change today and support future generations of students who may not be able to attend St. John's without scholarship aid," said Director of Athletics Mike Cragg.

"We are especially grateful to Jim and Anissa Shannon for their generosity to support students in such an important and impactful way."

The first scholarship will be awarded for the 2021-22 academic year. Williams and Caraher will assist the University in the selection process for both the scholarship recipient and the St. John's Basketball honoree annually in the month of August.

"With everything going on in the world right now we thought this is something that was needed to inspire high school students who are looking to get an education," said Williams. "For me as an African American this was something that I really appreciated being a part of."
