The St. John's Athletic Department officially launched a renewed partnership with Nike on Monday, as the world leader in athletic footwear, apparel and equipment will outfit St. John's athletic programs and their 300-plus student-athletes beginning with the 2019-20 academic year. The Red Storm and Nike's department-wide arrangement will rekindle a vibrant relationship between the two institutions, as Nike played a key part in St. John's athletic history until 2013.
"We are excited to realign St. John's Athletics with an iconic brand and pioneer in sports performance," said St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "Providing premier resources to our student-athletes is a central focus of our department and we believe fostering this partnership with Nike demonstrates our commitment to competing at the highest level for our respective sports."
The Red Storm's partnership with Nike, the world's most widely recognized name in the field of sporting apparel and equipment, will provide a significant boost to all of the Red Storm's 17 varsity athletic programs. As part of the agreement, Nike will design and supply footwear, apparel and equipment for training and game-day uniforms. The comprehensive agreement also includes marketing and promotional opportunities.
Nowhere has Nike's excellence in the industry been more evident than on the hardwood, where Nike affiliated schools have won six straight national championships and 10 of the last 11 overall in men's basketball. St. John's basketball's history with Nike dates back to the days when Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca roamed the sidelines.
With Nike as a partner, St. John's enjoyed some of its most successful runs in the NCAA Tournament and memorable moments at Madison Square Garden.
Official St. John's uniforms will be unveiled in the coming months, as will an increased inventory of Nike products in the official online store and at the campus bookstore.
