Nicotra Early College Charter School

The Staten Island campus academic partnership with the Lois and Richard Nicotra Early College Charter School is an innovative pre-Admissions college credit program that prepares high school juniors and seniors for college success.

Created by the Office of the Vice Provost on the Staten Island campus in collaboration with Nicotra leaders, the St. John’s academic partnership brings Nicotra students to campus for a four-semester course sequence taught by St. John’s faculty members.  St. John’s welcomes its first cohort of Nicotra students for the Fall 2021 semester.

An innovative “College Knowledge” series prepares Nicotra students for their Staten Island on-campus experience before they enroll in St. John’s courses.  Based on the latest research in college transition and student retention, the “College Knowledge” series introduces participating students to the skills and opportunities associated with St. John’s students' success. Over their four semesters and summer sessions on the Staten Island campus, Nicotra students have the opportunity to take up to 36 St. John’s University credits, lowering the cost of their tuition when they enroll as full-time college students and advancing them toward a baccalaureate degree with both the academic and life skills for graduation and beyond.

The mission of Nicotra Early College Charter School is to promote an accelerated pathway to higher education which will enable students, including those that live with emotional challenges and/or other disabilities, to graduate from high school with a Regents Diploma and the opportunity to earn college credits from St. John’s University. With its academic partnership with Nicotra Early College Charter School, St. John’s strengthens the connection of its Vincentian Mission to the Staten Island community and extends its educational opportunities to a new generation of St. John’s students.
