Legal Studies Major Enjoys Rewarding Internship with New York State Supreme Court Judge
“Growth through engagement,” is how Legal Studies major Angel Dilawar describes her St. John’s University experience thus far.
“Overall, St. John’s holistic approach equips me with both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences essential for success in the legal field.”
Angel serves as a judicial intern for Hon. Nestor H. Diaz in the New York State Supreme Court’s Criminal Term for the 11th Judicial District, describing the experience as “surpassing my wildest dreams.”
Angel, an immigrant from Pakistan, stressed that what initially drew her to St. John’s University were its exceptional legal curriculum and extensive Study Abroad programs, which she has availed herself to the fullest possible extent. She made it clear that her student experience at St. John’s has provided the groundwork for a successful legal, and hopefully, judicial career.
Angel greets each day of her internship with eager anticipation. “I’m acquiring new knowledge and experiences constantly,” she said. “Judge Diaz has generously granted me the unique opportunity to sit on the bench with him and observe the courtroom from that vantage point. His welcoming and cordial demeanor has further amplified the internship experience. I’ve gained substantial knowledge.”
She added, “The learning experience has been enhanced through Judge Diaz’s insights into efficiently parsing case details and maintaining impartiality. Observing his adept communication style with the convicted, adjusting tones for encouragement or clarity, has been instructive.”
Various court proceedings, including murder trials and confidential hearings, have provided Angel with critical exposure to the inner workings of the legal system. “I’ve assisted in scheduling court adjournment dates and participated in planning committee meetings, which has solidified my understanding of court operations.” Angel has also witnessed the significant impact of court reporters, court clerks, law clerks, sergeants, and other court officials—all of whom, she emphasized, play pivotal roles in the overall success of proceedings.
Angel hopes to attend law school and noted that through her courses and extracurricular activities she is developing many of the necessary skills to succeed. “Through diverse law courses, especially Legal Research and Writing, I’ve gained essential skills like case briefing and memo writing. Engaging with the Legal Society and Constitutional Law Society has expanded my network and provided real-world insights. The prelaw adviser’s support has been indispensable in exploring opportunities and resources aligned with my goals.”
“Overall, St. John’s holistic approach equips me with both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences essential for success in the legal field.”
Angel has also interned in the Office of New York City Mayor Eric L. Adams and the Office of Office of Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-Queens), who represents New York’s Sixth Congressional District.
She has also participated in the Global Passport program, “which was a defining moment in my University career. Living and studying in Rome, Italy, broadened my horizons and pushed me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to better understand global issues and the importance of cultural sensitivity in today’s interconnected world.”
A commuter student, Angel has made the most of her on-campus experience despite her hectic schedule. Actively involved in service activities on and off campus, she is an altar server and lector at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. “I assist clergy during services and deliver scriptural readings to enhance the congregational experience.” Last year, she volunteered as an English tutor for ENGin, designing and implementing personalized English lessons for a Ukrainian student, focusing on their specific learning needs and goals.
Angel credited Ashley M. Bozian, Ph.D., Adjunct Instructor, The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies, as a particular inspiration. “Her passion for her field, positive and engaging teaching style, and friendly demeanor with students has made such an impact. Her enthusiasm for world history has greatly heightened my interest in the subject and has substantially broadened my knowledge and skills in this area.”
Initially drawn by the University’s renowned legal program, Angel said her journey has provided her with rewards she never anticipated. “St. John’s, despite its size as a large University, maintains a close-knit, community atmosphere. This sense of unity stems from our ability to discover and honor what we all have in common.”
“Through active participation in legal societies, valuable prelaw advising, and diverse campus events, I’ve prepared for my future career and connected with a community that values social responsibility and global awareness. This blend of professional preparation and personal development through active engagement has truly defined my time at St. John’s.”
