Professor Becomes Double Grant Recipient for Sustainability Research
After a semester’s research leave working on her project, “Industrial Entanglements: The Black River as Political Ecological Agent in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica,” Associate Professor of Anthropology Anne M. Galvin, Ph.D., has secured two separate grants to support her continued work in this area. One, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Global Research Grant, is being offered for the first time at St. John’s University. The other is a prestigious postdoctoral research grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the preeminent source of grant funding for international anthropological research.
Long Island Graduate Center to Open in Hauppauge, NY
In an effort to maintain a strong educational presence on Long Island, St. John’s University has leased 11,000 square feet of space for its new Long Island Graduate Center in Hauppauge, NY. The Suffolk County site replaces St. John’s former Oakdale campus.

Ph.D. Student Lands Research Grant for “Tutoring While Latina”
The International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) has awarded SJU student Nancy Alvarez ‘18Ph.D. with the Winter 2017 Ben Rafoth Graduate Research Grant for her dissertation project, “Tutoring While Latina: Making Space for Nuestras Voces in the Writing Center.”

At Academic Event, Students Gain Insights on Caribbean History and Culture
Barbadian filmmaker Lisa Harewood has dedicated many of her professional efforts to accurately depicting the Caribbean experience. She presented her latest effort, a 16-minute film entitled Auntie, at St. John’s University’s Queens, NY, campus this spring.

Photography BFA Student Named Among “Next Generation of Bronx Photographers”
Growing up in the South Bronx, Abigail Montes ‘18B.F.A. was aware that something had happened to her neighborhood before she was born. She saw vacant lots and remnants of burned-out buildings, but didn’t know a lot about the Bronx’s history until she came across Mel Rosenthal’s book of photographs, In the South Bronx of America.
15th Annual Communications Connection a Success
St. John’s University’s Staten Island campus held its 15th Annual Communications Connection on Tuesday, March 21. All Mass Communication majors were invited to attend an evening filled with networking opportunities, and to build connections through St. John’s alumni.
