1969: One Giant Year for the Ages
A half century ago, a series of monumental events took place over the course of one calendar year that would change the world and leave an indelible mark on history as one of the most culturally defining years to date. In this four-part series, we take a look back at life in 1969, as well as the people, places, and events of that year and their impact on society and the St. John’s community.

Students Participate in Annual Service Pilgrimage to Lourdes

English Ph.D. Student Wins Prestigious Ben Rafoth Grant
English Ph.D. candidate Anna Cairney has been awarded the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) Ben Rafoth Graduate Research Grant for her dissertation research, which focuses on editorial paradigms of writing support. Anna is interested in how advanced writing is nurtured in the university, specifically looking at the role of writing centers in supporting doctoral students. Nancy Alvarez ‘19PhD also won the Ben Rafoth Grant in 2017.

Caribbean Writers Series Welcomes Haitian-American Author and Activist
Through spoken words and song, noted Haitian-American professor, anthropologist, poet, feminist, performance artist, and activist Gina Athena Ulysse, Ph.D., delivered a poignant keynote address at the 14th Annual Caribbean Writer’s Series in The Little Theatre at St. John’s University on Thursday, February 7.

Plunge Experience a Leap of Faith
Rather than spend their winter break relaxing after a busy semester, a group of St. John’s students traveled to places like Houston, TX; St. Louis, MI; and Philadelphia, PA, for a week of outreach, advocacy, accompaniment, construction, and community building as part of the University’s Plunge Program.
