When I graduated from St. John’s University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I wasn’t sure exactly where my career would take me. It was my career adviser at St. John’s who introduced me to the opportunity in the Office of International Admission. He connected me with the department, put in a good word for me, and spent time helping me prepare for the interview process by reviewing my presentation, conducting a mock interview, and sharing invaluable advice. Looking back, his mentorship played an important role in helping me begin a career that has become incredibly meaningful.

As an International Admission Counselor, I have the privilege of working with students from across the world. I initially recruited students from Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, and now my territories include the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.

My work is a combination of international travel and virtual recruitment. Throughout the year, I visit schools, attend college fairs, and meet with counselors and families overseas, while also hosting webinars, virtual presentations, and one-on-one appointments online. Before traveling to a new country, I spend time researching its educational system, cultural customs, transportation, and local etiquette so I can represent St. John’s respectfully and better understand the students I will meet.

The role has pushed me to become more adaptable, culturally aware, and confident in my communication skills. One of the biggest learning points has been how much of this job is built on relationships. Students are making one of the most important decisions of their lives, and in many countries I work with, the university decision is a family decision, so building trust with both students and parents is essential. Every conversation requires cultural awareness, active listening, and the ability to tailor my approach to each student’s background and goals. Being a part of that journey is both exciting and humbling.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is learning how different educational systems and cultures shape students’ college searches. Although every destination has left a lasting impression, Jordan remains one of my favorite places to visit. I was inspired by the warmth and hospitality of the people, the country’s rich history, and the genuine enthusiasm students had for pursuing higher education in the United States.

I hope the St. John’s community recognizes that our international students contribute far more than geographic diversity. They bring resilience, unique perspectives, and experiences that enrich our classrooms and campus. One of the greatest rewards of my job is welcoming students to Queens after first meeting them thousands of miles away and watching them begin a new chapter at St. John’s. Moments like those remind me why I love the work that I do.
