St. John’s University has earned its highest national ranking in two decades, making substantial gains across several key categories in the newly released U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2027 rankings.
The University climbed 14 places to No. 137 among National Universities, reflecting continued momentum in academic quality, student outcomes, and institutional reputation. St. John’s was also recognized among the nation’s leading private institutions, debuting at No. 71 among a new ranking of Top Private Colleges and Universities.
“These rankings reflect the remarkable dedication of our students, faculty, administrators, staff, and alumni who advance the St. John’s mission every day,” said Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of St. John’s University. “Our continued ascent demonstrates the strength of a St. John’s education, rooted in academic excellence, professional preparation, and our unwavering Catholic and Vincentian commitment to opportunity and service.”
Among the University’s strongest performance areas were several nationally recognized academic programs:
#6 in Insurance, rising five positions and reinforcing the national prominence of the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science.
#33 in Finance, improving 12 places from the previous year.
#276 in Undergraduate Computer Science Programs, a remarkable jump of 53 positions.
#207 in Undergraduate Psychology Programs, improving six positions.
#96 in Best Colleges for Veterans, moving up 10 places nationally.
The rankings also highlighted St. John’s longstanding commitment to providing access and opportunity. The University remained among the nation’s leaders in student success and upward mobility, ranking #75 among Top Performers on Social Mobility.
Maciek Nowak, Ph.D., Dean, and Joseph H. and Maria C. Schwartz Distinguished Chair at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, noted that the University’s national recognition in business disciplines reflects both faculty excellence and the strategic advantages available to students studying in New York City.
“Our continued rise in Finance and Insurance reflects what we are building at Tobin: rigorous academic programs that are deeply connected to industry,” said Dr. Nowak. “Our students have New York City as their classroom, with access to leading companies, accomplished alumni and mentors, and hands-on experiences that bring what they learn in the classroom to life. That combination prepares them not only to enter the business world, but to make an impact in it.”
The University’s advancement in national rankings underscores broader institutional investments in academic innovation, student support, experiential learning opportunities, and career preparation. As St. John’s continues to attract talented students from New York, across the nation, and around the world, the University remains focused on delivering a quality, affordable Catholic education.
“Amid a rapidly changing higher education landscape, St. John’s continues to strengthen its position ensuring every student is equipped with the skills, experiences, and opportunities needed for lifelong success,” observed Simon G. Møller, Ph.D., Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
