The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) recently elected Judith L. Beizer, Pharm.D., FASCP, AGSF, Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice in St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as its President-Elect. The appointment recognizes Dr. Beizer’s decades of leadership in geriatric pharmacy and positions her to help shape the future of care for older adults at the national level.
“Congratulations to Dr. Beizer on her election as President of the American Geriatrics Society,” said Anne Y. F. Lin ’84CPHS, ’86Pharm.D., FNAP, Chin Ling and Sallie Wang Endowed Dean, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “This distinguished honor reflects her exceptional contributions to the care of older adults, as well as the deep respect she has earned among her peers. We are immensely proud of Dr. Beizer’s achievements and her leadership in advancing the role of pharmacists as innovators and leaders in geriatric care.”
Dr. Beizer joined St. John’s in 1988 and has been active in the field of geriatrics for more than 40 years, focusing on medication use in long-term care and sub-acute rehabilitation, and is dedicated to interprofessional, team-based care and the education of future clinicians.
“Being elected as president-elect of the American Geriatrics Society is a huge honor,” said Dr. Beizer, who is only the third pharmacist to be elected to this position. “One of the things that I admire about AGS is their commitment to being interprofessional—all our committees and the board have nonphysician members, including pharmacists, nurses, social workers, and more.”
In addition, she practices as a Clinical Pharmacist at the Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in the Northwell Health System. At the Stern Center, she provides clinical pharmacy services for sub-acute rehabilitation patients, precepts pharmacy students and residents on rotation, and serves on the faculty of the geriatric medicine fellowship program.
Her longstanding commitment to the American Geriatrics Society includes nine years on the Public Policy Committee, service on the Nominating Committee, and two terms on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Beizer is a past president of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP). She was the 2016 recipient of the George F. Archambault award, ASCP’s highest honor, and the 2001 recipient of the ASCP Richard S. Berman service award. She has also served on the US Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatrics and Gerontology Advisory Committee.
“Every member of the health-care team has an important role in the care of older adults,” Dr. Beizer explained. “The pharmacist is a crucial and well-respected member of the team, and I hope to encourage more pharmacists to join AGS and get involved.”
Founded in 1942, the American Geriatrics Society is a nationwide, not-for-profit society of geriatrics health-care professionals dedicated to improving the health, independence, and quality of life of older people. Their 6,000-plus members include geriatricians, geriatrics nurse practitioners, social workers, family practitioners, physician associates, pharmacists, and internists who are pioneers in serious illness care for older individuals, with a focus on championing interprofessional teams, eliciting personal care goals, and treating older people as whole persons.
