On March 30, 2026, the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) welcomed St. John’s University students to their monthly webinar series to announce “financial literacy, liberation, and leadership” as the proposed theme for 2027’s National Women’s History Month. Since their founding in 1978, the NWHA has set the annual theme for nationwide educational campaigns which are frequently used for lesson plans by teachers across the country and often mentioned in Presidential or Congressional proclamations. The 2027 theme is being further developed by NWHA members and St. John’s University – with feedback collected via a public survey throughout April – before officially announcing a refined theme in early May 2026.

The March 2026 theme of “Leading the Change: Women for a Sustainable Future” was the first theme developed in partnership with St. John’s University, a partnership that culminated with a print publication and online social media campaign. A gallery show and reception was held on February 25, 2026 with a panelists including NWHA’s Interim Executive Director Dr.Jill Kracov Zinckgraf, artist Theresa Lovero, project leaders Fiona Lakeram and Cara Dunlevy. They were joined by St. John’s alumna Siobhan Anderson – Senior Vice President of Financial Planning & Analysis and Investor Relations for The Wella Company - who generously sponsored the evening.

The three elements of the proposed 2027 theme are currently described as;

  • Financial Literacy centers on a mission to educate all students and the public on financial wellbeing, budget strategies, employees' benefits and rights, as well as acknowledging topics of financial crisis or distress. This is envisioned as lesson plans both in print and on social media.
  • Financial Liberation relies on NWHA's expertise as historians and storytellers - providing a narrative of financial adversity, persistence, perseverance, and prosperity - not only for Women but milestone moments that have shaped financial futures.
  • Financial Leadership will continue the newly formatted "March of Icons" calendar with a 31-day centerfold paying tribute to 30 leaders’ – past, present, and future – with International Women's Day (March 8) remaining vacant for communities to honor local icons. Each icon will be accompanied by a short bio with a longer social media tribute to be posted online.

A full slate of partnerships with other colleges, high schools, and interested companies will be announced on August 26 (Women’s Equality Day). Those interested in partnering are asked to complete the same survey and indicate how they would like to be involved. Additional questions may be directed to [email protected].
