Taraja Brown,a junior in The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies, has been named the first recipient of The Dr. Robert Tomes Humanitarian Scholar Award. This prestigious annual honor recognizes students who exemplify a deep commitment to community service, reflecting the University’s Vincentian mission.
Established in memory of Robert R. Tomes, Ph.D., a beloved professor, historian, and mentor, the award serves as a tribute to his lifelong dedication to education, social justice, and serving others. Dr. Tomes was known not only for his academic contributions, but also for his deep passion for humanitarian work, inspiring countless students to make a difference in their communities.
Taraja exemplifies the spirit of this award through her outstanding dedication to community engagement and service. Her commitment to creating positive change reflects the values that Dr. Tomes championed throughout his life and career.
“It was such an honor to present the very first Dr. Tomes Humanitarian Scholar Award to Taraja, a woman committed both to her education and to making a positive difference in the world,” said Dr. Tomes’ wife, Mary Tomes ’81C, ’07MLS. “It was a particular thrill to do so before a sold-out crowd on Johnnies Day at Madison Square Garden, as Dr. T was a huge Red Storm fan who greatly enjoyed teaching so many athletes and basketball players over the years, as well as countless others! He was a big believer in education and lifelong learning—and in the power that comes with using what he considered the great gift of knowledge to transform both one’s own life and the lives of others.”
