St. John’s University was recently honored among universities for its performance and participation in the 2024 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

On October 29, members of The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration Committee presented St. John’s with a third-place plaque at a meeting of affiliated parade organizations. Other local universities were also honored at the ceremony. Daniel Sullivan, a third-year History Major from Hicksville, NY, and student leader of the Irish Society, accepted the award on the University’s behalf.

“The enthusiasm and participation of the extended St. John’s family is what made this award possible. Our hope for 2025 is that participation will be bigger and better than ever,” Mr. Sullivan said.

On Saturday, March 16, a spirited group of more than 100 St. John’s University revelers marched up Fifth Avenue, one of The Big Apple’s most famous streets, in the 2024 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade—the oldest and largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world.

Before stepping off, a special St. John’s alumni brunch was held at Stout New York City on East 41st Street, where Johnnies enjoyed Irish food, music, and good cheer. Stout is owned and operated by Martin Whelan ’84CBA, President and Majority Partner in the Stout NYC Hospitality Group, and an avid supporter of St. John’s who makes his various bars and restaurants available for University-sponsored events. Stout NYC is the official bar of St. John’s Athletics.

“Coordinating any large group in a parade is like herding cats,” observed Brian Browne ’93C, ’97G, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs, who annually coordinates the University’s participation in the historic parade. “But the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade is always a wonderful experience for marchers and spectators alike and the pride for St. John’s is palpable!”

The 264th New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on Monday, March 17, 2025.
