More than 70 percent of St. John’s University’s students are commuters who travel to campus daily for classes and extracurricular activities. Popular modes of transportation include the true New York staples such as the subway, bicycles, and walking, but for many students, driving remains the most convenient option.

In an effort to promote safe transportation habits, St. John’s will host UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour® on October 18 at the University’s Staten Island, NY, campus. The tour is created by UNITE, a tech organization that promotes social responsibility.

“We are pleased to work with UNITE to help eradicate dangerous driving and prevent accidents,” said David Gachigo, Associate Dean, Division of Student Affairs, Staten Island Campus.

During Common Hour, from 1:50 to 3:30 p.m., students can take part in immersive activities that will help them experience and better understand the risk of hazardous driving behavior. Participants can try a state-of-the-art simulator that replicates the experience of driving while distracted or under the influence of alcohol and marijuana. This allows them the opportunity to examine their behavior in a dangerous situation without the actual threat and consequences.

UNITE’s Arrive Alive Tour® collaborates with safety offices, government agencies, educational institutions, communities, US military bases, and corporations. This event offers students an opportunity to learn more about UNITE, a leading organization for health and wellness in America, and their approach for promoting safe driving through innovative and engaging technology methods.
