Shanté Paradigm Smalls, Ph.D., (they/them/theirs), Assistant Professor of Black Literature & Culture in the Department of English, was awarded the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the James Weldon Johnson Institute at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Smalls will spend the 2019-2020 academic year revising their forthcoming book, Hip Hop Heresies: Queer Aesthetics in New York City (NYU Press, forthcoming), and working on their second manuscript, tentatively titled, Androids, Cyborgs, and Others: Black Afterlives in Futurity.

Dr. Smalls will teach one undergraduate class while at Emory University in Spring 2020 in the Department of African American Studies. This is Dr. Smalls’s second major fellowship since starting at St. John’s University in 2014. Dr. Smalls received the the Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship for the 2017-2018 academic year. Dr. Smalls also was a two-year Mellon Postdoctotal Fellow at Davidson College from 2011-2013 after receiving their Ph.D. from New York University in 2011.

St. John’s University Announces Commencement 2026 Honorees

St. John’s University will hold its Undergraduate-Level Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 18, at 10 a.m. on the Great Lawn. The Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, S.T.D., D.D. ’86SJC, ’88M.A., Archbishop of Boston, MA, will serve as this year’s speaker and be conferred an honorary degree during the ceremony.
